- M.L.E Chapter 56: Leveling Up Again (Part1)
Catherine’s face turned pale at the unrelenting curse directed towards the second prince.
She anxiously looked around, worrying that someone might have overheard.
Fortunately, apart from the three of them, there was no one around the table set up in the training hall.
“Adrian, what are you going to do if something goes wrong?”
Catherine was so anxious that she just called me by my first name, even though she had been addressing me by “Your Excellency.”
However, Arcia’s reaction that followed was even more intense than hers.
“I can’t stand the second prince’s creepy gaze. I don’t want to get involved, so tell him he to go away.”
Arcia’s spontaneous response momentarily lightened my mood, but it didn’t last. The situation was too perplexing for me to maintain a composed expression.
Does the second prince want to confront me?
“Well, my Lady….”
Catherine had only been Arcia’s personal maid for three days, but it seemed she had already noticed the emotions the second prince held towards her.
Seeing her flustered expression and Arcia’s determined stance against the second prince, I realized I couldn’t leave things like this.
“Bring him here.”
“What?”
“Fetch that messenger. Bring him here.”
“Oh, Yes sir.”
Catherine hesitated, as if questioning my decision, but eventually retraced her steps to do as I asked.
A little while later.
“Her Excellency Count Klein. and… … uh! His Excellency the Marquis Lawrence?”
The young man who approached Arcia with a cheerful smile saw a man, who was clearly gaining a notorious reputation through the recent territorial battles, and then he froze in place.
Judging by the insignia on his uniform, he appeared to be a member of the Royal Guards.
It was quite amusing. How did someone who had become a royal knight end up running errands like this?
Naturally, my face was filled with displeasure, and the messenger was fidgeting, casting pleading glances towards Arcia for help.
However, Arcia paid him no attention. She was only interested in the cheesecake I had specially ordered.
Quite the amusing fellow. When did he start showing such an attitude towards Arcia?
“What brings you here? State your business.”
If you put it in writing, it seems like a soft phrase… But if you listen to it in person, it was intense and colder than Bringum Empire’s icy winds, as sharp as a razor blade.
He hesitated for a moment, then, flinching when I tapped the table with my finger, he replied in a trembling voice.
“His Royal Highness Prince Luke van Reinhart sent this flower as an invitation to ask Her Excellency Count Klein for a meal.”
With that, he took out a dazzling bouquet of flowers from a pocket dimension ring that even a high nobleman wouldn’t be able to afford.
“Please.”
I snatched up the bouquet and handed it to Arcia. She, who was in the midst of enjoying the cake, absentmindedly returned it to me with a wry smile.
Due to the result of a frequently repeated process, I had a habit of storing items in my pocket dimension.
I tucked the bouquet Arcia returned to me into my pocket dimension. I would sell it in the capital later, making sure it attracts attention.
“That, that’s for Lady Klein…”
“I already passed it on, didn’t I? But Count Klein gave it back to me. Is there a problem?”
“No, there isn’t. My apologies.”
He swallowed dryly, his intense gaze fixed on Arcia.
Seeing her unchanging expression, he cleared his throat with a cough.
“My Lady, can you give me an answer about the dining.”
“What about Adrian?”
“His Highness the Prince has only invited your Excellency, Count Klein.”
“Then I refuse.”
“Um, well, Your Excellency, please don’t…”
Is he one of the second prince’s loyal subordinates?
Surprisingly persistent.
I once again tapped the table with my finger, drawing his gaze.
“Which noble family do you belong to? I’ve heard that one must have some connections to become a Royal Guard.”
“What’s my family name…?”
He was very nervous about my question and asked me carefully, and I answered with a grin.
“I enjoy taking sky fortresses and destroying the noble families. Have you seen the news?”
“…Yes.”
“Still, I can’t simply behead Prince Luke’s messenger. Instead, how about I take care of your parents instead?”
An unexpected threat.
But it seemed he viewed me as someone capable of carrying out such threats.
His complexion turned as pale as a corpse.
“If anyone makes unpleasant proposals to Arcia in the future, I won’t stand idle.”
“But, I am acting under His Highness the Prince’s orders…”
“Do I need to understand your perspective when I find it unpleasant? No! Whether you die in the middle or not, it doesn’t matter: take care of it yourself.”
I approached him and patted his shoulder, giving him quite a fright. He trembled and quickly averted his gaze, swallowing hard.
“Return and deliver it exactly as it is to His Highness… the Prince.”
Then, in a very low voice, I said something meant only for him to hear.
“I hope we can continue our good relationship just like this. However, if you provoke me further, I might go on a rampage. Let me be clear; she belongs to me.”
Although I maintained some decorum, the content was a threat in itself.
Thanks to that, the messenger, a Royal Guard, swallowed his words.
“Um, are you really asking me to deliver it as is?”
“Yes, without a single word changed.”
No matter how powerful I was with the title of marquis, behaving this way towards the second prince, who was considered to have a strong royal authority, could seem risky.
He might start considering me… ‘A lunatic’ or ‘A madman.’
And this notoriety would only further enhance my image.
I smirked at the errand boy, who was still standing with a confused expression.
“Aren’t you going?”
“Huh?”
“Why don’t you tell me your family name? No, no, never mind, I can find it myself…”
“It was an honor to meet you! Your Excellency, I’ll take my leave now!”
The second prince’s messenger fled immediately.
“Have you always been like that?”
Catherine looked at me with a surprised expression.
“I’m usually cold towards my enemies.”
“Enemies? You don’t mean His Highness the Prince, do you?”
I chuckled then raised an eyebrow as I saw Arcia, her eyes were wide open and cheeks flushed.
* * *
“Did he really say that?”
“Yes, it felt like his gaze was serious, not joking.”
“Tsk, so Marquis Lawrence, he’s not perceptive enough to understand the situation. You can go now.”
“Yes, Your Highness.”
Prince Luke van Reinhart furrowed his brow as he sent the messenger, a Royal Guard he often used for errands, out of his office.
In response, Marquis Hammington, the Noble Chief Inspector, who was a close aide to the second prince, spoke cautiously.
“Your Majesty, it might be time to step back. Provoking Marquis Lawrence any further wouldn’t be wise.”
“What?”
“If you truly desire her, wouldn’t it be better to take action once you’ve secured the throne?”
The displeasure on the second prince’s face solidified.
Then, the second prince turned his head to look at Hammington, who held an influential position within the kingdom.
