The Master of Language - T.M.L Chapter 10 (Part 2):
When I looked at the Undine directly, her eyes widened.
[What? Huh? What! Are you looking at me?]
She seemed excited at a glance.
What should I say to her?
[Hello?]
Her expression brightened indescribably.
She swam furiously through the water until she was right in front of me. She even stretched her hand out above the water’s surface. The water’s surface was pushed up into a round bump by her hand.
[Grab my hand.]
I hesitated for a moment but soon interlocked my fingers with hers.
At that moment, someone grabbed my hand firmly.
My concentration scattered, and I opened my eyes.
“Master?”
Master Abana held my wrist and pulled it up. A water mass in the shape of a girl was dragged out with it.
Master Abana immediately swung her staff, and purple light flowed from its tip, enveloping the water mass.
Splash.
The water mass that fell to the ground kept changing between its original form and the girl’s shape. A faint purple light in the shape of a sphere circled around it, as if it was struggling to escape.
“Did you capture Undine?”
Master wiped sweat from her forehead.
“Even though I’m an elf of water and forest, water isn’t my specialty. The water magic I’m going to use this time is difficult without an Undine’s help.”
For the past month, Master had only eaten herbs with water attributes and dreamed about water. It seems she needs Undine on top of that.
I continued watching the splashing water figure.
It seems to be resenting me.
“Honestly, I feel a bit sorry for her.”
“Don’t be. Undine isn’t a real entity.”
“Pardon?”
Master Abana stood up.
“Let’s go for now. We need to hurry if we want to reach Grim Lake.”
Master quickly moved towards the cabin. The trapped Undine floated up and followed behind her.
I followed Master. The house was empty, and the door was open.
Psyche, sitting on one side, put down her teacup and pointed to the entrance with her finger.
“She just left.”
“…”
“I thought you were obsessed with Psychokinesis, but it seems you can be interested in other things too?”
“Huh?”
I asked back, but Psyche turned her head and looked away.
‘It seems you can be interested in other things too?’
Her words seem to have a hidden meaning.
For now, I put the thought aside and quickly went outside.
Master was already standing at the boundary.
“Hurry up and come here. We need to walk through the forest, so hold my hand.”
I ran quickly to Master and grabbed her hand.
Master Abana immediately charged into the forest, and I followed behind her. There was no consideration like before in Master’s hurried walk.
So this is what it’s like to walk seriously.
I should learn this now.
“Don’t feel guilty about deceiving Undine. It’s not like that.”
Saying that just makes me more concerned.
“When I responded, she seemed so excited. I do feel a bit sorry.”
“Familiars may feel like they’re alive, but in reality, it’s you who breathed intelligence into them with your psychic power. Even Undine turns into ordinary water when the distance increases and the magic power runs out.”
That can’t be.
No matter how well I handle psychokinesis, I can only create ripples in water, not create a human form.
“Is that really true?”
Master gave me a sidelong glance.
“You’re quite adept with psychokinesis now. Today, you’ll get a familiar. So, don’t be too attached to that Undine.”
That’s welcome news.
So the reason she told me not to respond all this time was for today.
“I understand, Master.”
“psychokinesis isn’t just a force. It contains your will. And when that will accumulates, it becomes an intelligent being. That’s what a mage’s alter ego, a familiar, is.”
Then even that rough way of speaking came from my head.
Though I don’t use swear words.
But most of the words I heard in my life as a slave were curses.
Was that reflected unconsciously?
I glared at the floating water next to Master Abana.
The half-formed Undine seems to be constantly glaring at me.
No matter how I look at it, it seems like a living creature.
After walking for a while, we arrived at our destination.
“We’re here. This is Grim Lake .”
Master walked to the lakeside. Then she waved her hand. The purple prison-like burst with a pop, and the Undine inside spilled into the lake.
I looked up at the clear sky.
“If we stay outside for too long, won’t Senior Kalasta come?”
Master Abana closed her eyes, knelt down, and stretched one hand over the water’s surface as she spoke.
“If he was going to come, he would have come already. And there’s no way I wouldn’t have sensed him. He doesn’t just hide his own aura, he spreads it for tens or hundreds of kilometers.”
“Why?”
“You’ve met him, haven’t you? That’s his personality. No, his choice. That self-confidence is also his weapon. He might easily perform powerful magic that’s difficult for others. Because all things in the world will listen to him well.”
If you gain something, you lose something.
This is the basic principle of magic that Master Abana emphasized every day.
Kalasta must have chosen majesty over secrecy.
He must be strong against the weak, and weak against the strong.
“Then…”
Master Abana cut off my words.
“I’m sorry, Ran. Right now, I’m trying to perform magic that’s beyond my level, and not even my specialty. Only the fact that I’m an elf makes this possible. So I need to concentrate.”
“Ah, I’m sorry.”
“If you watch quietly, you’ll learn a lot too.”
After saying that, Master Abana remained still as if frozen in place.
Come to think of it, I’ve never heard what Master Abana’s specialty magic is.
I haven’t even seen her familiar, let alone her specialty magic.
The purple light flowing from her staff.
That’s all I know about Master Abana’s magic.
Well, I’ve spent all day long studying psychokinesis, so it’s no wonder I know so little.
I must have been pretty oblivious.
Ah.
Is that why Psyche was so cold?
It was then.
Creak.
It was a faint sound, but goosebumps rose all over my body.
Creak creak.
I don’t know what it is, but I don’t want to keep hearing it.
But my ears focused on it even more.
My head turned slowly, and my eyes followed.
Eventually, I saw something floating above the lake.
“A corpse?”
In the center of the lake floated a corpse with pale skin so swollen it looked like it might burst at any moment.
