The Master of Language - T.M.L Chapter 6 (Part 1):
At my age when I’m still growing, there’s no way I could be easily satisfied with a diet of only vegetables and fruits.
I ended up eating everything on the table.
“We’ll have to prepare more next time.”
I responded out of courtesy.
“No, it was enough.”
Master Abana stood up. Then, looking towards the lake, she said,
“Shall I teach you magic now? Or do you want to rest today and start tomorrow?”
These were the words I had been waiting for.
“Let’s start right away.”
“Hmm. Full of enthusiasm, aren’t you? Is it because you suddenly want to impress the pretty girl next to you?”
“……”
The master grinned and beckoned to me. Then she bent down and placed her hand close to the water’s surface.
It seemed like she was about to start the magic lesson in earnest.
I slowly got up and approached the master.
The master made eye contact with me and spoke softly.
“Mages are inherently born with psychokinesis.”
“Psychokinesis?”
“Yes. It means moving objects with just your thoughts. Only those who can do this have the qualities of a mage.”
Come to think of it, I had thrown Oshalo and then the first mate without even moving a finger.
So that was psychokinesis.
“I think I know what you mean.”
Master Abana’s eyes sank very low for a brief moment before returning to normal.
“That’s actually the foundation of all magic. It’s about causing an event with strong will. Psychokinesis is the most basic event, in other words, it’s about ‘moving’. That’s why you don’t need to read spells. All mages can do it naturally.”
“Hmm, I see.”
“If you can use psychokinesis, you’re already an apprentice mage. As an apprentice, you need to study your psychokinesis well. If you use force roughly, it can damage your head. You might spurt blood from your nose and faint on the spot. At first, it’s too vague, so you use it excessively or inefficiently. That’s why you need to hone your psychokinesis and make it completely your own, just like moving your own hand.”
“……”
“This is the most basic of basics. Most people tend to neglect psychokinesis as they get more advanced, but you should never do that. No matter how powerful magic you can cast, remember that all magic starts from psychokinesis.”
I nodded repeatedly.
“Got it. So what should I do?”
Master Abana’s eyes narrowed.
“Did you really understand?”
“Yes. I told you, didn’t I? I understand everything after hearing it once. So what’s the specific method to hone psychokinesis?”
Doubt filled the master’s eyes, but it soon subsided.
She must have decided to trust me.
“The way to study psychokinesis is to move objects with as little mass as possible, slowly and smoothly. But you have to do it in various ways. Sticking to one method will cause imbalance and lead to trouble later. Now, look carefully at the surface of the lake.”
She closed her eyes slightly.
Then, small ripples started from her hand and spread across the entire lake.
She opened her eyes.
“Like this.”
Is this really all?
I frowned.
“Is that all?”
“The point is to make it as small as possible. My master’s ripples were so small they were invisible to the eye. Even I haven’t reached that level yet.”
So, the smaller the better.
It’s clear what I’m supposed to study.
“So it’s about precise control, right?”
“Correct. This is the most basic part of studying psychokinesis. Practice this first, and when you get used to it, I’ll teach you other methods.”
After saying that, she removed her hand from the water’s surface and stood up.
Then she gestured for me to try.
Alright.
I rubbed my hands vigorously and then placed them on the water’s surface.
“You? Are you ambidextrous?”
What a sudden question.
“Ah, yes. Is it okay to use both hands?”
“Hmm. Good. Ambidextrous… You’re really an interesting kid.”
I don’t know what being ambidextrous has to do with being interesting, but she’s clearly making an expression that says I should ask about it, but I didn’t.
I stretched both hands towards the clear lake.
My palms touched the cold water surface.
I closed my eyes and focused on the feeling of the water.
Ripples.
Ripples.
It should feel like gently grasping and releasing.
But.
The water’s surface kept moving between my fingers, tickling me.
Strange.
I slightly opened my eyes.
Then I saw a girl peeking from under the water.
The girl was trying to interlock her fingers between my finger joints. That’s why my hand felt ticklish.
I felt a chill rising from my pelvis.
“Whoa!”
I fell backward. Master Abana grabbed my shoulder and pulled me back.
The master was looking down at me with an astonished expression.
She shouted in anger.
“You! You just saw an Undine, didn’t you?”
“What?”
“An Undine! A water spirit!”
A water spirit?
I murmured softly.
“Well, if you mean a girl in the water, I guess so?”
Master Abana gaped at me with her mouth wide open.
Now that I look, even Psyche’s eyes have widened to twice their usual size.
“To summon a familiar while studying psychokinesis for the first time… Anyway. In this case… You’re more impressive than I thought. No, not impressive, you’re a monster.”
I answered monotonously.
“Am I?”
“……”
“So? Should I continue or stop?”
She stroked her chin for a moment, then said,
“We should continue studying psychokinesis, but… remember this. Summoning a familiar now is extremely dangerous. If anyone tries to communicate with you through your mind, don’t respond. Got it?”
“So I just keep doing what I did earlier, right?”
“Do it again, but absolutely do not react to the Undine you see in the water. Got it?”
Is it that unusual?
Seeing how agitated the master has become, to a degree I’ve never seen before, I should probably agree.
I said gruffly,
“Got it.”
“……”
