Harry Potter and the Secret Treasures - H.P.S.T Chapter 1705: Shooting Out
Sensing the terrifying magical pressure emanating from the castle, the Devouring God was about to flee!
The direction of his escape was the same as that of the God of Death — into the Veil of Death itself.
At this moment, only the Veil of Death could block the supreme strike Evan was about to unleash.
That place was the realm of the dead, a domain fundamentally incompatible with the Devouring God’s own power. Once inside, his magic would be suppressed. Yet in terms of domain authority and power hierarchy, he still stood above Herpo the Foul.
Without Evan’s interference, given enough time, he could completely devour Herpo.
Although entering the Veil of Death ran counter to his initial plan to devour Herpo and then descend into the real world, the Devouring God didn’t intend to stay here and directly confront the spell Evan was gathering. Such an immense surge of magic, if unleashed like before, would cause destructive power that even the Devouring God would fear. He needed to dodge Evan’s strike.
Entering the Veil of Death wasn’t entirely without hope!
His followers — and the Dark wizard Voldemort, with whom he had once cooperated — would reopen the Veil of Death a thousand years later. When that happened, he would return to the real world, and nothing would be able to prevent his descent.
Time and death were the greatest enemies of mortals, but to an evil god they meant nothing.
He had already waited long enough. Waiting another thousand years meant nothing to him at all.
The statue of the evil god shot towards the Veil of Death, and Herpo, hovering above the gate, was terrified!
That thing actually intended to enter his domain, his lair. Did he mean to devour him completely?
No. Absolutely not!
Inside the Veil of Death lay far too many of his secrets!
After creating this domain, Herpo had transferred his lair and all of his magical research entirely into the Veil of Death’s interior.
There were all sorts of curses, Dark magic, and Dark magic artifacts he had developed; grimoires recording his efforts to conquer death; all manner of Dark creatures he had created — from early experiments like basilisks, Dementors, and black flies, to later, indescribable creations of the evil god; the rituals and transmutation structures he had used to remake himself into an evil god; and, most importantly of all — his Horcrux.
In short, it was the core of all Herpo’s secrets. He could not allow the Devouring God to enter.
As the spatial domain most closely linked to the real world, the interior of the Veil of Death was known in ancient Wizarding lore as the Other Shore — the realm of the dead, and a part of the primary world itself.
Over the centuries, many wizards had entered it through various means.
Ravenclaw’s ancestors and other ancient wizards had gone there, witnessed the terror of death, and, after escaping, sealed the Veil of Death. The Peverell brothers had passed through it as well, enduring Death’s trials and emerging with the Deathly Hallows. Salazar Slytherin had entered Herpo’s world with the Twin Serpent Staff, wreaked havoc within it, even defeated Herpo, and carried away his body, the Basilisk, and the magic for creating Horcruxes and transforming into a God of Death.
Some of these things Herpo had deliberately allowed the intruders to take. Others had been seized by force.
But regardless, for thousands of years, Herpo the Foul had influenced the real world and the Wizarding community in this way. His various lines of magical research became the very foundation upon which modern Dark Magic was built, and the magical artifacts he had created passed into legend.
Any wizard with any knowledge of death and life could not bypass Herpo or the space he had created.
Of course, the interior of the Veil of Death was equally fraught with danger. The wizards who managed to bring anything back from within were the successful ones — but they were an infinitesimal minority. The overwhelming majority entered the Veil only to die there.
Their bodies and souls became Herpo’s experimental materials, and in the end, part of his Dark army.
Herpo the Foul had never been afraid of wizards entering his world!
Even after suffering immense losses at Salazar Slytherin’s hands a century earlier, he would take revenge in due course. After Slytherin’s death, Herpo had seduced the wizards of the Ravenclaw family into opening the Veil of Death, using it as a means to return to the real world.
He sought to reclaim his body and once again conquer the world with his Dark army and the power of death.
Herpo firmly believed that no one could stop him, and that even failure itself was of no consequence to him.
To mortal wizards, he was almost the embodiment of invincibility.
Immortal and indestructible, he could only be sealed away.
But the Devouring God was a different matter entirely; he would likely consume all of Herpo’s power and the entire space itself!
That would mean utter ruin!
No matter how many secrets Herpo had hidden within his domain, all of them would be devoured, reduced together to nothingness.
Herpo struggled violently, trying to break free of his restraints and reach the interior of the Veil of Death first.
Only then could he close the Veil of Death before the Devouring God entered.
But the Devouring God did not loosen his grip; countless tentacles still coiled tightly around him, pinning him directly above the Veil of Death. No matter how much Herpo struggled, he could not move an inch.
Herpo let out a series of unintelligible, frantic roars. Seeing the statue of the evil god about to enter the Veil of Death, he disregarded everything else. Allowing the Devouring God into his world was far more terrifying than being destroyed here.
Since that was the case, then they would perish together!
As long as the Horcrux remained, Herpo still had a chance, however slim that chance might be.
With a tremendous roar, the Veil of Death began to close rapidly.
A ghastly green light surged wildly from within the Veil, forming a barrier that blocked the evil god’s statue from approaching.
Even though that green light quickly dissipated, it undeniably stopped him for the moment. The Devouring Evil God was also enraged; the ugly tentacles on the statue thrashed violently, and those already wrapped around the Veil of Death began to prevent the stone gate from closing.
More and more tentacles surged towards the Veil of Death from all directions, so many that they could no longer keep hold of the God of Death.
Breaking free at last, Herpo shot towards the Veil of Death as well. Before the closing gate, the two evil gods’ hideous forms were crushed together in a single, grotesque mass.
High above the Ravenclaw family’s castle, with the aid of the two Philosopher’s Stones, Evan finally brought the vast majority of the magic under his control. Once his own will gained the upper hand, he no longer needed to consciously guide or restrain it — the remaining magic surged towards him of its own accord, eager to align itself with his command.
Under the ancient enchantments of the Ravenclaw family, all this magic was unified.
Evan had never been so powerful. He fixed his gaze upon the Veil of Death, his sight piercing through the overlapping phantoms of the evil gods and the light of magic, until it settled on the grotesque statue of the evil god before the gate. He meant to seize control of all the magic at his disposal and unleash a single, overwhelming final strike.
Blue and orange-red magical energies surged and clashed, coiling around each other and roiling in a boiling tempest!
In the very next instant, amidst a thunderous, world-shaking roar, a cataclysmic beam of magic burst forth — an awe-inspiring column of light with a radius of more than five hundred feet, tearing through the heavens as it was unleashed. …
