Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 3 (Part 2):
Helmut walked very quietly, without making a sound.
Without Elaga’s protection, he was nothing more than strange prey in this forest full of monsters.
The first thing Elaga taught him was how to hide his presence.
Fortunately, he had the scent of Elaga on him. There were no monsters brave enough to touch Helmut, who had the scent of Elaga in this vicinity.
‘Elaga said it’s beyond where the flower vines are lush.’
The flower vine, which contained poison, was brilliantly blooming red flowers. But in the Forest of Roots, you should not let your guard down just by looking at the beautiful appearance.
The flower vine was a carnivorous plant. It’ll quickly grab the body of the creature that came to it, inject poison through the thorns, and take it as nutrients.
It was a plant as dangerous as any monster, but fortunately, it only grew near the water.
Careful not to provoke them, Helmut cautiously walked around the vine thickets. Soon, he encountered an obstacle.
Carefully avoiding the flower vine to avoid stimulation, Helmut soon hit a roadblock.
‘A cliff… I can’t jump over it.’
The other side was quite far. Elaga could jump over it, but it was impossible for Helmut.
The bottom was a deep abyss, with fierce water flowing.
“I must safely cross it.”
Helmut decided to cross the water where the cliff was lower, taking a detour.
‘To the left.’
Leaving a mark on this cliff, Helmut changed direction. The cliff was getting lower as he went downstream.
He hadn’t walked for a few hours when he reached a crossroads where he could cross the valley. The valley, seen up close, was wide and deep.
‘Do I have to swim across here?’
Helmut approached the water’s edge. The current was not strong. The transparent valley with a green tint was clear enough to see the bottom. The temperature of the water would be as cold as ice.
‘Wait.’
Helmut, who was about to throw himself into the water carelessly, stopped abruptly.
He felt a chill down his spine. It was a sensation that stimulated his instincts. That sensation had saved Helmut several times before.
Helmut took a step back and looked into the water. He felt a gaze watching him from under the water.
A familiar gaze. It was the gaze of a predator!
-Splash!
Suddenly, something exploded out of the water. He threw his body to the side like lightning.
Splash! It violently covered the place where Helmut had been. It was a green fish similar in color to the water.
The creature, the size of Helmut’s torso, was wriggling, revealing sharp and dense teeth.
it fixed its gaze on Helmut, opening and closing its mouth, trembling with regret. Eyes crazed with hunger.
Chills ran up his spine. Helmut, who had picked up a sharp stone from his waist, struck the creature’s head.
Crack! The fish was shaking its tail and took its last breath. It had sharp teeth, but it was a monster of a weak species.
Helmut, who let out a sigh of relief, took a few steps back from the water’s edge.
‘There’s more than one.’
He felt faint signs in the valley water. Numerous monsters of the same species as that creature were targeting him.
‘How do I get across?’
If he goes into the water, he will be torn apart and die. If he goes upstream, the width of the valley might narrow. He would have to go against the direction he had come so far, but that would be safer.
‘But if I leave Elaga’s territory, the monsters will target me right away.’
If he goes a little further in that direction, he will leave the territory. Looking at the width of the valley, he would have to go a long way to reach a place where the waterway was narrow enough for him to jump over. The risk would increase.
Helmut’s eyes became serious.
‘It’s too early to give up.’
If he goes back like this, he will only receive Elaga’s ridicule.
‘There must be a way.’
Surely, Helmut was just a young boy. But human strength did not originate from a weak body.
Unlike monsters born with strength, humans have a way to complement themselves with something else.
As he calmly looked around, his gaze fell on the flower vine nearby. A good idea came to mind.
The efficacy of the poison contained in the flower vine is to paralyze the body and lose consciousness.
‘Will it still be effective if it’s diluted in water?’
He picked up a sharp stone and sneaked up to the flower vine. In response to the vibration, the thorny vine moved slowly.
No matter how fast it moves, it’s a plant. Before the vine attacked, Helmut moved first.
He caught the end of the vine and cut it off with a stone knife. Crack! A blueish liquid flowed out from the vine.
Having severed the vine several times through the same process, Helmut obtained a sufficient amount.
The vine, which had rapidly reduced in size, withered away and died.
