Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 334 (Part 2):
“After all, Your Majesty doesn’t trust me, and I’ll be useless to you while I can’t use magic.”
“You’re intelligent and have already been of great help to me, magic or not. You will continue to be.”
“A mage who cannot use magic cannot represent House Fidelis. Father will use this as an excuse to strip me of all authority.”
“Then you’ll stand beside me as the Queen of Veneta. Isn’t that enough? If you wish, I will have all my promises put into writing by dawn.”
“Your Majesty, what I need is your trust.”
“If I don’t trust you, whom would I trust?”
The king wrapped his arms around Teresa’s shoulders. She looked up at him with tear-filled eyes.
As the atmosphere suddenly turned warm and embarrassing, Elaga made retching sounds most uncharacteristic for a cat. It was poor acting.
Wiping away her tears, Teresa spoke firmly.
“Still, you must have it notarized.”
“…Very well.”
When the king agreed, Teresa embraced him and shot a triumphant look at Talon.
Of course, it was a look the king couldn’t see.
Helmut, who had briefly wondered if the king preferred men given Teresa’s concern about Talon, soon found another answer.
The king’s scale was divided between Teresa Fidelis and Black Hawk.
Teresa had initiated the Rodril matter, while Black Hawk had brought new information and resolved it.
Given the circumstances, the king’s trust would naturally tilt toward Black Hawk. Teresa, now unable to use magic, must have felt as though everything she had worked for was crumbling beneath her.
After all, Teresa had strongly advocated using Rodril, and while she had achieved some results, she had made the king negotiate with Rodril at considerable cost.
If the king hadn’t discovered information about Alea through Black Hawk, the negotiations might not have happened at all.
Everything she had done stemmed from her desire to achieve merit.
She had been top of the Magic Department. She had continued to advance after returning to Veneta.
She was the type who couldn’t stand anything less than achieving and being acknowledged as the best.
Even Helmut could clearly see her intentions.
Teresa must have known for a while that the king had feelings for her.
‘So she plans to grasp power through means other than being a mage.’
For Teresa, who had become disadvantaged in her competition with Black Hawk due to temporarily losing her magic abilities, this was the best choice to maintain power.
Whether she had planned this from the beginning or not was unclear. As queen, there would be no higher position unless she attempted to usurp the throne.
Talon muttered quietly, as if to himself:
“What an impressive young lady.”
Helmut silently agreed. Beside him, Elaga murmured.
[What? So who won? Was it a draw? Was it a negotiation?]
He was still far from understanding humans.
The King of Veneta gently pushed Teresa aside and said.
“Teresa, regardless, I’d like to finish my conversation with our guest.”
“Are you asking about last night? Is there something I’m not aware of?”
Teresa’s eyes narrowed. Talon quickly intervened.
“I’ve already briefed the king on the information I uncovered. Why don’t you listen together?”
The king turned directly to Helmut.
“Are you preparing for revenge? Is that why you sought out Rodril?”
Preparing for revenge? It sounded strange. Did revenge mean plunging a knife into the heart of the mother who had abandoned him?
However, Helmut didn’t want to do that.
He recalled the voice he had heard as a very young child, the voice that had led him out of the Forest of Roots. That voice, despite all the betrayal, had shaped who he was today.
Though Helmut’s past and present might have once been wrapped in terrible despair, they weren’t filled solely with misfortune.
Even though Margret had not wanted Helmut’s appearance and had betrayed and abandoned him.
The king observed Helmut’s expression and slowly shook his head.
“That’s not it. You’re still wavering. Uncertain of your path.”
“Is that why you summoned me?”
Helmut changed his tone again and spoke stiffly.
“I was curious. What choice the forsaken bloodline of Renosa would make.”
“I have not yet made my choice.”
The king stepped closer to Helmut. His voice was low, almost a whisper.
“But if my experience is any guide, you’ll come to know. No, perhaps you already know.”
Serious eyes. Eyes filled with wisdom and understanding gained through countless experiences.
“There’s only one way to protect yourself in the end.”
To fight and claim what’s yours—such was the destiny often thrust upon royalty.
The Grand Duke of Renosa was royalty who ruled the Principality of Renosa, and Helmut was a member of the royal family.
Even if that authority had been stripped away, they couldn’t deny the blood flowing through his veins.
‘But you don’t know that I carry The Seed of Darkness.’
Because of that, the king didn’t know that Helmut had the Temple as an enemy. He seemed not to know.
How then could he and Helmut be the same? Whether in position or justification, Davis was far better off than Helmut.
But the king continued lightly.
“And you have more than I do. Exceptional swordsmanship, companions too. Don’t you? I was fortunate that she appeared in my life.”
He glanced at Teresa with a smile, which she returned.
It was a brief conversation, but one that conveyed much.
