Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 472 (Part 2):
Kiiiiik! Kiiiiiiik! Kyaaaaak!
Emergency, emergency! Monsters have appeared! If translated into human language, it was roughly that meaning.
The ones that had scattered to attack suddenly changed trajectory. With movements almost like panic, they turned their backs and fled in disarray.
With that, a brief lull ensued. The ones that had swarmed in hordes smelled the scent, regained their senses, and ran away. In the process, they tangled among themselves and fell onto the swamp, getting crushed.
Alea warned.
“The effect of the scent will wear off, and they’ll come back.”
This was the central region, and in the central region, there was the Demon King. Since the Demon King would exert tremendous influence, the scent’s effect would evaporate quickly.
It was fortunate that Baharek, Elaga, and Igrelle showed no signs of abnormality.
“We must advance.”
Helmut said calmly. Elaga showed reluctance.
[What about the swamp? My size makes it hard to get out once I fall in. I can’t swim across either.]
It would be good if he could leap over, but to leap, there needed to be land on the other side.
Should they have Igrelle transform and ride her?
But while it might work for one Elaga and the humans, carrying Baharek too would be impossible.
If they left Baharek behind and he turned into an enemy, it would be troublesome.
“How do we cross here?”
Luke Yeager asked while staring at the swamp.
Heike responded.
“It can’t all be swamp; we’ll find a path.”
Her gaze turned to Sian. When it came to terrain issues, it was obvious who could find the answer the fastest.
“Ah, right.”
Sian, who hurriedly sent out an earth spirit, soon found the path.
“It’s not entirely swamp… It’s a mix of swamp and solid ground. We should be able to proceed.”
Distinguishing swamp from solid ground with the naked eye was nearly impossible. But an earth spirit could accomplish that.
They couldn’t delay. Although there was a large amount, the Rosetta scent would eventually run out.
Baharek pulled the carriage again. It was better to move all at once.
Sian sat at the very front of the carriage, guiding Baharek on the path.
“Right, then left there! Again, left!”
Shouting directions at the top of his lungs.
Elaga followed closely behind. Incidents repeated where demonic beasts flew in like moths to a flame, smelled the Rosetta scent, regained their senses, and fled.
Among them, the ones that stubbornly failed to regain sanity had to pay a bone-deep price for their weak minds.
However, if such harsh lessons continued, they would wear down the educators’ nerves. And it was free education, at that.
“What is this, we can’t even sell the demonic beast corpses.”
Luke Yeager grumbled discontentedly, in a manner unbefitting the commander of the Palma Knights.
Asuka’s sharp warning rang out.
“Watch out there!”
“Don’t let your guard down! They’re coming from the swamp!”
Heike shouted. A massive man-eating fish leaped up and plunged back into the swamp empty-handed.
Splash!
Following that, a gigantic crocodile surged up from below, ambushing the party’s flank.
Helmut split the vicious creature’s head in half right then.
Crunch!
The crocodile, spilling brain matter profusely, tenaciously thrust its snout forward.
Its mouth, opening and closing ferociously with jaw strength enough to bisect a human body and more, was terrifying.
Helmut’s second strike pierced the crocodile’s core. It was deep within the massive body.
However, it wasn’t just one.
‘Since they’re crocodiles, they arrived later than the flying ones.’
From afar, he sensed heavy movements skimming over the swamp. Swamp-dwelling demonic beasts chasing them on land.
Originally, there was no such thing as a swamp in the central region. No need to wonder where these guys came from.
Because demonic beasts gathered from the entire Forest of Roots were present here in the central region.
“Baharek, keep running. Sian, focus on guiding!”
“Baharek, right, right!”
Without slowing down, they nearly fell into the swamp at times, but they advanced agilely.
Demonic beasts poured out along the path they took.
Following the flying ones, the swamp-dwelling ones began attacking them, but that wouldn’t be the end.
Once they escaped the swamp area, the ground-dwelling ones would densely block the path ahead, leaving no room to step.
“There are too many.”
High Priest Levina muttered. She had decided to hold the sacred artifact staff and recover her strength while moving.
A high priest’s holy power was a force that could deliver a fatal blow to the Demon King. It would be troublesome to waste it on these.
Befitting a high priest who enjoyed desk work, her stamina wasn’t particularly good.
She hadn’t come unprepared, but even before entering the Forest of Roots, she had spent hectic days without a moment to spare. How much could she have built up her stamina?
Levant shouted while swinging his sword.
“Don’t worry, Lady Levina. The sacred barrier hasn’t been broken yet. The great Lumen will guide us!”
Levina felt a strange sensation looking at this next-generation talent of the temple, so fanatical that he didn’t even feel anxiety.
But his words were right. At least they were advancing.
There was still time. They would eventually reach the central region.
Levina steeled her resolve.
