Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 474 (Part 1):
Kuaaaaaang!
[Let’s go!]
Elaga took the lead and charged forward, and Helmut’s party found themselves in a situation similar to before.
Elaga led the way, smashing through, while Baharek followed, pulling the carriage.
But it was trickier than before.
The demonic beasts at the second barrier were more systematic.
They didn’t charge all at once but in sequence—one would be cut down in an instant, only for another to attack immediately after.
“Keugh!”
The moment Luke Yeager split a wolf’s head, a squirrel that had rushed from the right bit into his arm.
The armor on his shoulder was torn clean off, leaving a gash.
Luke Yeager flung the squirrel out of the carriage and stabbed the next beast that immediately took the place of the fallen wolf’s head.
The attacks came breathlessly.
Taking advantage of a brief gap, Sian cast purification and recovery magic on his shoulder.
“Thanks.”
“Be careful.”
From the other side, Asuka screamed.
“Ouch! Ouch! This thing bit my arm!”
Sian moved over, quickly staunching the bleeding from the arm where flesh had been torn away and casting recovery magic.
“You really need to be more careful.”
Sian threw out a warning. He was using too much effort.
“Who wants to get hurt on purpose?”
Asuka grumbled, glaring as he raised his sword.
It was a good thing he hadn’t received a fatal wound.
For nearly a full day, without rest, the battle continued. How difficult was it to block the onslaught that rained down like arrows onto the carriage.
It was a relief that the people here were among the most skilled swordsmen in the human world; otherwise, they would all have become corpses by now.
Among the swordsmen, Asuka had been injured the most, and the only one among them who hadn’t been hurt was Helmut.
Even Levant had taken some scratches.
Igrelle, who single-handedly defended the rear of the carriage with a terrifying presence, was an exception.
Sweat beaded on the faces of the party.
The scattered attacks of the beasts poured down in a way that was troublesome for mages.
Unlike before, they couldn’t just scorch them with large-scale attack magic, and the beasts even managed to dodge magical attacks.
Most attack magic was area-based. The ones with incredibly fast movements sensed the direction of the magic and dodged just as it was about to pour down.
If hit on the outskirts of the magic, they could deflect some of the impact.
When the mages tried to shoot them down one by one, there were even clever beasts that would bait the magic and then twist their bodies in mid-air to evade it.
That extraordinary agility and organization.
Ordinary demonic beasts couldn’t possibly do that.
Even the rulers of the regions overwhelmed with brute force and demonic energy, not fighting cleverly.
Alea frowned.
‘It must be the Demon King’s control.’
As a collective of wills, the Demon King’s ability to manipulate individual demonic beasts was superb.
It was as if he controlled each one with countless minds.
In this situation, magic was useless except for counterattacks or protection.
‘At this rate, we’ll just waste our mana.’
No matter how exceptional a mage, there were restrictions in the Forest of Roots.
Alea and Heike decided to conserve their mana and contribute to protecting the party.
Sian protected the carriage with spirits and occasionally helped the party with recovery magic.
Just as the rulers of the regions displayed power like an inexhaustible spring, the one with the least depleted power among them was him.
Although the limits of Sian as a vessel meant he couldn’t use all of his power, the source of his strength was none other than the great Earth Spirit.
He was fulfilling his role more than enough even as a small vessel.
Alea and Heike observed the translucent black barrier as if comparing it.
The barrier, which had been faintly visible from far away, was now much closer.
What they had to do was break through that black barrier.
The power of High Priest Levina had to be saved until the moment they reached the Demon King.
They had broken through a sacred barrier, so breaking through that black barrier, which was surely weaker, should be possible with a similar principle.
But that black barrier. It was no ordinary thing. The closer they got, the more the resonant hum it emitted dizzily rang in their ears.
Ziiing! Ziiing!
It was as if it was giving orders to the demonic beasts. The sound grew louder the closer they got to the barrier.
Elaga, who had advanced far ahead, gradually slowed and drew closer.
[I’d better stay by the carriage.]
Elaga couldn’t explain his actions well. He just moved on instinct.
Alea stuffed Rosetta’s Pills into his mouth.
Elaga began circling the carriage, eyes blazing as he smashed the demonic beasts.
He bit the backs of the necks of beasts trying to attack the carriage and crushed them with his front paws, displaying ferocity.
His speed was tremendous, but his destructive power was equally terrifying.
The central region, the air thick with demonic energy. It would be strange if Elaga wasn’t overflowing with power.
Thanks to that, their breakthrough speed slowed, but the party became safer.
The density of the demonic beasts didn’t decrease, but they cleared them as if by inertia, and the party displayed the skills they had honed over a lifetime.
At some point, as they pressed forward looking only ahead, the black barrier drew near.
But then an anomaly occurred.
Perhaps it was an anomaly they should have anticipated.
