Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 73 (Part 1):
Contrary to their worries, the first interaction started with a conversation. Perhaps realizing this wasn’t the right moment, Sian quietly withdrew and disappeared, leaving Helmut alone in the room, waiting for Alea. When Alea returned and saw Helmut still in the room, she didn’t get angry.
“How did it go?”
“Do you really want to share a room with me?”
Alea asked, raising an eyebrow. It seemed she didn’t like that question. Helmut felt a strange sensation and lowered his head.
“It’s not that. What else can we do?”
If he had known it would come to this, he would never have helped with the entrance exam. If the other person hadn’t been Helmut, he would have done whatever it took to drive them away. Alea suppressed her rising frustration. She felt uneasy about someone entering her personal space. In the position of someone with a secret, she always had to be on guard. Even in this moment when her only sanctuary was being taken away, she couldn’t afford to be careless.
“Don’t get me wrong. I find it uncomfortable to share a room with anyone else.”
Alea said after biting her lip.
“There’s one way, though. Pretend to move your stuff here and commute from Kudrow Mansion.”
“They have a curfew and conduct inspections, don’t they?”
It was a flexible curfew. It was fine to train in swordsmanship late at night or stay overnight in the Magic Department’s research lab. It just had to match the usage record.
“Do you think I can’t deceive the academy staff with magic?”
Since he couldn’t use coercion, he had to find a new way to approach the situation. Alea stared straight at Helmut. Even Helmut hadn’t expected to become Alea’s roommate. He didn’t particularly prefer dormitory life himself.
But commuting? Ethane wouldn’t approve of that. Helmut had come to Greta Academy on Ethane’s recommendation. If he commuted from Kudrow Mansion for no reason and it became the talk of the town, it would put Ethane in a difficult position.
Helmut pointed out, “I don’t want to cause trouble. And if I share a room with you, someone might get suspicious if I don’t show up at the dormitory.”
The fact that Helmut had become Alea’s roommate was a big deal, and it would definitely attract a lot of attention. It was entirely due to Alea’s fame. Helmut didn’t know why she disliked it so much, but it wasn’t his responsibility. But it would be better if the other party accepted it without resistance.
Even from Helmut’s perspective, dealing with a magician was a headache. Especially Alea. Conversation was the means by which humans resolved issues.
“You’re better than anyone else to me, and I think it’ll be the same for you.”
Alea was neat and quiet. He knew how Alea spent most of her time because she had tutored him. Although he hadn’t interacted with many people, it seemed like they got along well. It couldn’t be that bad.
While Helmut had intended to say that, it sounded different to Alea’s ears. There was a flicker of emotion in her expression. It felt like her ears were burning. Alea forced herself to speak in a cold tone.
“I’m regretting it now. Helping you with the exam.”
But Helmut realized that Alea’s gaze had softened. His words seemed convincing after all.
“It’s already done. How about we think about how to use the room best for you?”
‘Looks like we’ve reached a conclusion.’
Helmut stood up and left Alea, who had fallen silent.
“I’ll stay at Kudrow Mansion until three days before the start of the semester. I’ll just move my things for now.”
He had initially planned to move right away, but Alea’s resistance and the convenience of staying at Kudrow Mansion for now made it a better choice. He could use the training grounds, and the house was spacious. He could have meals or take baths whenever he wanted. A nobleman’s manor was a place that couldn’t be compared to a dormitory.
‘I should start getting things ready.’
Helmut planned to gradually move his belongings and make preparations for dormitory life. There was still more than a month left, so he could take it slow.
When he returned to the manor, Ethane Kudrow was there.
“Have you been assigned a dorm room?”
“Yes, I heard on the way back.”
“You’re going to share a room with Alea, aren’t you?”
“You heard, huh?”
“Actually, I had a hand in it. Alea is a talented student in magic, so I told the administrative office that it would be better for her to share a room with a close friend like you. It would be better if you knew someone like that.”
Helmut was worried that as a commoner, he might get into trouble if he helped out a Swordsmanship Department student too much. Sharing a room with Alea would prevent subtle harassment like belongings disappearing. Commoners often fell victim to such things.
“I see.”
Helmut thought it might be better if Alea didn’t know about this. After all, if it weren’t Helmut, someone else would have become Alea’s roommate.
“If you need anything, just let me know. There will be a lot to buy tomorrow, so go with the butler.”
“Sure.”
