“Well, I heard some compliments about him from Duke Riverdale. He said he wasn’t sure if even a Vanguard of Aura Master level could compete against him.”
“D-Duke Riverdale said that? That’s quite impressive!”
“Yes, Duke Riverdale, known for his cool-headedness, praised him so much that I became curious. But now that I’m facing Lord Lawrence in person like this, it seems like he has an extraordinary love for wizards.”
His bear-like build and arrogant demeanor, as if looking down on people from above, piqued Arcia’s interest, making her think of the Second Prince.
“How can the Second Prince resemble someone like him?”
If Arcia had even a bit of a personality suitable for broadcasting, she could have appeared together to alleviate this situation. It was regrettable in many ways.
However, on the other hand, I thought that I could fight without hesitation against such a person.
To everyone, his condescending remarks were obviously dismissive, and the two MCs and the cast broke into a cold sweat.
“Th-that statement has a feeling of a declaration of war. Lord Lawrence, what do you think?”
Still, the experienced MC tried to turn this situation into a topic for the camera somehow.
I chuckled and replied, “Did you say Count Felix Odwell? I didn’t know who he was until this moment, but it’s amusing that he became an Aura Master.”
Treating him as an unknown figure, Count Felix’s temples showed thick veins, and the MCs’ complexions turned pale.
As if a fight was about to break out, I looked at the production team, but the PD kept sending continuous OK signs, as if it was something good.
“It was a heated battle from the beginning. Now, let’s move to a more suitable location for the actual comparison.”
* * *
A while later, we arrived at a famous lake in the Kingdom of Jordi. In the center of the lake, there was a massive island, and on that island rose a colossal building that resembled a coliseum. People referred to it as the Island of Duels.
It had a classic appearance, but it boasted modern facilities, including its own recovery system and a seventh-circle level defense barrier.
Today, for the 10th-anniversary special program, “Anthony” had taken over the Island of Duels. However, despite taking it over, there were a considerable number of people in the audience seats and VIP seats, which raised questions.
“Kyaaah! Oppa!”
“Lord Adrian!”
Even my fan club had secured a spot in one corner.
“Who are these people?”
“They are the lucky fans who won tickets for the 10th-anniversary event. Exactly 1,000 of them.”
Come to think of it, I vaguely heard that the audience would be joining us, but I didn’t expect it to be like this. Suddenly, it seemed like we were going to fight in front of the audience.
“Why, is it inconvenient with an audience?”
Felix, the Viscount, approached me and provoked me with his unyielding reaction.
Unfortunately, he wouldn’t know the reason why I didn’t react to his provocation.
I shrugged and climbed onto the stage set up in front of the large screen. As I did so, the blood vessel mark reappeared on Felix’s forehead, showing that he felt ignored once again.
Before the actual comparison of strengths, there was scheduled to be a discussion, perhaps to soften the atmosphere. However, it didn’t take long for Felix the Viscount’s expression to stiffen.
The reason was that while the questions from the cast were formal for him, they included numerous, spiteful questions for me, including my private life.
This was because Count Felix was being too arrogant and creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. It seemed that he considered the attention towards me as discrimination.
“A narrow-minded second prince who joins a pompous topic.”
Fortunately, the quick-witted MC, Jimmy, skillfully deflected the questions directed at me to balance the situation and not make Felix uncomfortable.
However, despite Jimmy’s efforts to make Felix more at ease, Felix’s unsatisfied attitude led to a pause in the talk. To transition to the discussion and away from the topic, today’s theme was introduced.
“Of course, the research and development capabilities of mages are well-known to everyone, so we’ll skip that part. Today, we’ll focus intensively on the combat abilities of mages and knights.”
“Since the basic unit of warfare has become the vanguard, the combat abilities of knights are well-known, and they are systematically quantified. However, today’s mages are more perceived as researchers than combatants, so there is limited relevant data. People don’t know much about the combat abilities of mages. Lord Lawrence, what are your thoughts on this?”
“To put it simply, the past perception of mages and knights was like this.”
Mage: long-range combat ability / Slow attack speed / Wide attack range
Knight: close-range combat ability / Fast attack speed / Narrow attack range
“In general, it was common knowledge that knights would win in close combat, and mages would win in long-range combat. However, with the enhancement of knight armor and the introduction of the vanguard force equipment in modern times, it has changed like this.”
Mage: long-range combat ability / Slow attack speed / Wide attack range
Knight: close-range and long-range combat ability / Fast attack speed / Wide attack range
A clear and concise comparison.
The simple reason behind not seeing mages on the battlefield after the introduction of Vanguard was that ironically, mages themselves found it difficult to participate in battles due to the equipment created by mages.
“That’s right. Unless there is a device that can convert a mage’s magic power into force like a knight, this is an unchangeable fact. Therefore, the official rule is that knights are for war, and mages are for technological advancement.”
Why did I address the facts without distortion?
Viscount Felix, who was sitting next to me, sighed.
“Then, isn’t a comparison unnecessary? As long as Vanguard equipment exists, mages can never defeat knights in battle.”
But I shook my head, disagreeing.
“Looking at two charts, knights with Vanguard equipment appear superior to mages. However, this superiority is only in terms of combat style, not necessarily greater strength.”
“I don’t understand what you mean by that wordplay.”
“It’s simple. The attacks of knights are too monotonous. They stab, slash, release force, and that’s just three patterns.”
No matter how you mix in unconventional movements to create confusion, this attack pattern doesn’t change.
“But mages have numerous means of attack. Stabbing, slashing, freezing, stunning, electrocuting, exploding, poisoning, immobilizing, and so on.”
“Ah, Lord Lawrence’s words ultimately mean that the outcome depends on how one fights, right?”
“That’s correct.”
However, it seemed that some couldn’t accept my words, as Viscount Felix and a few experts challenged me.
“No matter how many minor attacks are unleashed, they can’t penetrate the defense of force armor. It would be more practical to have knights remove their force equipment and fight.”
“Because battlefield interference magic is in place, mages can’t stop Vanguards charging in on hoverboards.”
Among the experts, no one seemed to understand my argument.
Frustrated, I proposed to the MC.
“It seems that a proper debate is impossible in this state; we should change the order.”
“Hmm?”
“For now, it seems we should demonstrate that my argument is feasible through a duel and start from there.”
In response to my proposal, the MC looked at the PD, who showed a reaction that as long as Count Felix was okay with it, it didn’t matter.
“Haha! Very well, there’s no reason to refuse. I will show Lord Lawrence that reality is not as rosy as he imagines.”
