Under the moonlight, Ian and his group ran all the way until they reached a quiet wilderness, where they finally stopped.
“Let’s rest here,” Ian said, gently placing the unconscious Queen the Plague on the ground and checking her condition.
Since Ian had healed her injuries earlier, Queen’s breathing had become steady, though she hadn’t yet awakened. Taking this opportunity, Ian sat down on the ground with Fujitora, intending to ask some questions.
“Uncle Fujitora, I understand why Ace and Izo came to Wano Country to help the Kozuki family, but why are you here?” Ian asked curiously. “Do you have ties with the Kozuki family?”
Fujitora nodded and said, “I was born in Wano Country, but I lost my parents at an early age and lived in extreme poverty, struggling to survive on the streets. You’ve seen the situation in Wano Country—isolated from the world and still relying on traditional agriculture, leading to chronic food shortages. When I was in my teens, I nearly starved to death during a famine. It was thanks to the aid of the previous head of the Kozuki family that I survived. Such kindness cannot go unreturned.”
“The previous head? Wasn’t that Kozuki Oden?” Ian asked.
“No, it was Oden’s father. But this kindness came from the Kozuki family, so repaying it to any generation is acceptable,” Fujitora replied with a smile.
“That was decades ago, yet you still remember…” Ian felt a deep respect for Fujitora. “No wonder I heard you left the Sky Island in a hurry while I was returning—you came straight to Wano Country.”
“This was a personal matter; I didn’t want to involve the pirate crew. Besides, Captain, you were heading to Whole Cake Island at the time, so when I received Marco’s call, I set out on my own,” Fujitora sighed. “But I didn’t expect that even teaming up with Ace and Izo, we would still be defeated by the Beasts Pirates and the Shogun’s army, failing to protect Lord Oden…”
“Did you fight Kaido?” Ian asked. “Was it Kaido who defeated you?”
Ian was well aware of Fujitora’s strength and thought that perhaps only Kaido could defeat him.
However, Fujitora shook his head. “No, I didn’t fight Kaido. I was fighting Wano Country’s strongest swordsman, Saijo, when I was ambushed by Queen the Plague, which led to my capture.”
“Saijo? The strongest swordsman we met earlier?” Ian frowned. “He seemed to be your friend?”
“Yes,” Fujitora nodded, a reminiscent smile appearing on his face. “We were companions wandering the streets in our youth. Looking back now… We were like beggars then, admiring the majestic samurai. Saijo even vowed to become the strongest swordsman like the legendary Dragon-Slaying Samurai Ryuma. Who would’ve thought, after decades apart, he really achieved it…”
“Uncle Fujitora, you’re not weak either!” Ian laughed. “You’re now the vice-captain of a Yonko pirate crew—not inferior to him!”
Fujitora chuckled heartily. “Captain, are you praising yourself?”
“Anyway,” Ian grinned, changing the subject, “didn’t that guy Kaido recognize you?”
“He did; how could he not?” Fujitora said. “At that time, Ace was up against Queen the Plague, Izo was fighting Jack the Drought, and we were surrounded by a large number of Wano Country’s soldiers, samurai, and ninja. Lord Oden didn’t escape but stayed with us to cover the retreat of his retainers. Perhaps because they recognized us and saw that such an important figure as Lord Oden was present, Kaido let the fleeing retainers go and personally captured us. At that time, news of you becoming a Yonko hadn’t spread yet, but since Ace and Izo are commanders of the Whitebeard Pirates, Kaido initially wanted to kill us on the spot. However, Queen the Plague suddenly whispered something to Kaido, causing him to change his mind and choose to interrogate Lord Oden first…”
“Oh? So this woman actually saved you?” Ian looked surprised at the unconscious Queen on the ground.
“Indeed,” Ace chimed in. “Because of that, the Shogun of Wano Country later took us from Kaido, bringing us back to Kyoto to imprison us…”
“I see…” Ian stroked his chin thoughtfully and suddenly asked, “When you recognized this woman as Queen the Plague earlier, why did you call her a traitor of Zou?”
Ace’s face turned grim. “Because later, when Kaido ordered Jack the Drought to pursue the fleeing retainers of the Kozuki family, I personally saw this woman give Jack a Vivre Card, telling him it pointed to Zou. She said that if the fleeing retainers sought help, they would likely go to Zou…”
Izo added, “Being a Mink from Zou herself, she led the enemy to her own homeland. If that’s not a traitor, what is? We went to great lengths to help those retainers escape, but her actions might have made our efforts futile…”
The three of them took turns explaining the situation, and Ian suddenly slapped his forehead, recalling the matter.
Although Ian hadn’t been to Zou yet, he knew that Zou was actually an ancient giant elephant from a thousand years ago. It roamed the vast seas, carrying the country of Zou on its back. Doroni had proudly mentioned this elephant in their chats. Due to Zou’s unique nature, it’s impossible to reach it by conventional means.
Constantly moving with no magnetic field, the Log Pose used by navigators at sea couldn’t locate it. Only through a Vivre Card could one reach Zou.
Doroni and Bepo could return to Zou because Doroni had protected his family member’s Vivre Card from Zou, even during his time as a slave, knowing it was his hope to return home.
So, as long as the fleeing retainers of the Kozuki family weren’t fools, they would likely use this characteristic to find a way to shake off Jack the Drought’s pursuit.
But now, Queen the Plague had given Jack a Vivre Card pointing to Zou, meaning that Jack could find Zou…
Ian didn’t know whose Vivre Card Queen had given to Jack—was it a friend’s? A relative’s? Or perhaps it was the Vivre Card of the thousand-year-old elephant itself?
In any case, Zou was likely to face Jack the Drought’s devastating attack, just as in the original history.
He knew that among the fleeing retainers was Kozuki Oden’s heir, Momonosuke. But according to the original historical trajectory, they would encounter a shipwreck during their escape, get separated from the ninja Raizo, and end up in Dressrosa. After discovering something amiss in Dressrosa under Doflamingo’s control, they would hastily set sail again, leading to Kanjuro being captured in Dressrosa, while Momonosuke accidentally boarded a ship to Punk Hazard…
Ian was now worried about the butterfly effect altering events. Since he had rescued Dressrosa from Doflamingo, it meant that Kin’emon and the others might not go to Punk Hazard. However, Jack the Drought, who was pursuing them, might reach Zou earlier than in the original story!
If that scoundrel Jack used poison gas attacks when met with resistance on Zou, wouldn’t that mean Doroni and Bepo would get caught up in it?
It seemed he needed to step in personally and eliminate Jack the Drought…
As he was thinking this, Ian heard a painful groan. Turning his head, he saw that Queen the Plague had awakened.
Earlier, Bonney had thought that Queen, being a woman, had been treated harshly by Ian and felt a bit sorry for her. But now, after hearing Ace and the others, as Queen woke up, Bonney stepped forward and kicked her!
She only felt disgust now for this woman who had betrayed her homeland!
Ian and the others didn’t stop Bonney, because in their view, regardless of your stance, even if you sided with Kaido and opposed Zou, you shouldn’t betray your own homeland! That was the place that gave you life and nurtured you; no matter how deep the hatred, it shouldn’t implicate your homeland, right?
Bonney’s cowboy boots had six-centimeter heels, and each kick was quite painful. Queen, whose injuries hadn’t fully healed, couldn’t help but let out sharp screams under Bonney’s assault.
Ace watched this scene and suddenly felt a bit of scalp tingling.
“This girl can’t be my relative! My cousin can’t be so rough…”
