The Master of Language - T.M.L Chapter 15 (Part 2):
Leaving it to me just like that.
Is this okay?
I turned to look at the red-haired mage.
The red-haired mage still had a fierce look in her eyes.
I said,
“You heard that, right?”
“……”
“Be honest. You don’t want to die either, do you?”
“……”
“Besides, you were wrong first, weren’t you? What if someone burned down your house? Wouldn’t you be angry?”
Then, the tightly closed mouth of the red-haired mage opened.
“I’m sorry about that.”
Suddenly apologizing?
What’s with this unpredictable personality?
I plopped down as Master often did, leveling my eyes with hers.
She couldn’t look me straight in the eye and kept her gaze on the ground.
I asked,
“Why did you do it? Did Kalasta order you to?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“I kept asking to come out, but she didn’t come out. I got so angry that I just set fire in the heat of the moment.”
“We weren’t inside at that time.”
“I’m talking about the High Elf. I was annoyed that she clearly sensed my presence but wouldn’t come out to see me.”
Come to think of it, there was that talk about abandoning a disciple.
“Even so, you set fire because of that?”
“I told you, I’m sorry about that.”
“……”
“What?”
Her eyelids folded inward in multiple layers.
The red-haired mage looking up at me was clearly watching my reaction.
“No, I just don’t understand. If you were going to answer so easily, why did you keep insisting on being killed?”
The red-haired mage’s face suddenly contorted.
“Because your master treated me carelessly.”
“Not me?”
“Do you think I’m stupid? You tried to save me. I can tell that much.”
We’re similar in that regard, but I’m not this inflexible.
“Master was also trying to save you. It’s just that you were being stubborn.”
“She only did it because she was afraid of Master Kalasta. It wasn’t sincere.”
“What about me?”
“What about you?”
“I could have tried to save you because I was afraid of Senior Kalasta too, right?”
“Why would you be afraid of Master Kalasta? My master wants to take you as his disciple.”
Now I understand.
She thinks I’m sincere because I saved her when I didn’t have to.
And Master isn’t sincere because she tried to save her only because she had to.
Suddenly, I became curious.
“Did Senior Kalasta talk about me a lot?”
“So much! There’s a High Elf right there, but he just briefly mentioned the High Elf and kept talking about you. So I came to see secretly, wondering how amazing she must be for a High Elf to not even catch his attention.”
“You came secretly? So your master doesn’t know you’re here?”
“Yeah, he doesn’t know.”
She really answers all questions honestly.
Can someone be this innocent?
No.
It’s because she’s this innocent that she set fire to the house in a fit of anger when she wasn’t welcomed.
Now that I look at her, she really looks like a drenched mouse.
“Are you really okay? Should I get you something to eat?”
The red-haired mage shook her head.
“Food is beneath my level. I’d prefer a potion if you have any.”
Potions are made by refining special ingredients.
If herbs are raw meat, potions are cooked meat.
I remember Master once saying that she didn’t know how to make them, so she ate the herbs raw, but potions are much more effective.
“We don’t have anything like that.”
“Come on. Is this really where a mage lives? No potions?”
“And I’m sorry, but I can only give you water herbs. We can’t keep you as a hostage if you regain your strength.”
“Then let me go! Find my staff for me!”
Suddenly, her face came close to mine.
Golden eyes.
White skin.
I turned my gaze away and naturally moved back.
“Try to understand my position too. If I let you go, you’ll try to kill my master, won’t you?”
“That’s true.”
“……”
She’s really something else in many ways.
When I didn’t say anything, the red-haired mage spoke.
“Don’t look at me like that. You try entering the water prison yourself. If you can endure even thirty minutes, I’ll become your disciple!”
“Was it that hard?”
“It was worse than all of Master’s tests combined. It was even more hellish for me who has mastered fire magic. I can never forgive your master.”
Given Kalasta’s personality, I don’t think he would teach gently and kindly.
In other words, the water prison was that painful, and her grudge against Master is that deep.
Now I see why Master wanted to just kill the red-haired mage.
She crossed a river of no return.
That expression fits perfectly.
“Don’t go anywhere, stay here. I’ll go inside and talk to Master first.”
“You took my staff. How can I go anywhere?”
I’m not sure of the exact reason, but it seems she can’t leave without her staff.
“Should I at least know your name? I’m Ran.”
“I already know your name from hearing about you. I’m Speria.”
“Speria? Alright. Just stay here for now.”
I nodded and then went inside the cabin.
Master wasn’t there, only Psyche was sitting at the table drinking tea.
“Where’s Master?”
“She went to sleep. What did that girl say?”
“She wants to be released. Anyway, she seems better than expected. I think she’ll even willingly eat the water herbs. She doesn’t seem like she’ll cause much trouble as a hostage.”
Psyche’s expression hardened slightly.
“By the way, why did you save her? She even set fire to the castle. I was in there too.”
“If we kill her, we don’t know how Senior Kalasta will react.”
Psyche didn’t say anything more.
But judging by her expression, she seemed quite angry about something.
She’s had that expression for the past month or so.
Right.
I rummaged through my clothes.
And I showed her the purple flower I had found on the cliff yesterday.
Unfortunately, due to all the intense movement, the flower was bent and broken in various places.
This is hardly presentable as a gift…
“What’s that flower? Don’t tell me it’s a gift?”
Ah.
Psyche saw my hand.
This is embarrassing.
“It was supposed to be. But a lot happened along the way, and it ended up like this.”
Psyche stared at my hand intently.
Don’t look at it so fixedly.
Did you think I wanted to give it to you like this?
“It doesn’t grow around here. It’s unique. Where did you find it?”
Luckily, she seems to recognize it.
“Near the cliff. I hadn’t seen it before, and the color was pretty. I thought you might like it, so I picked it.”
“……”
“Um. I’ve been too focused on studying psychokinesis lately. So, I’m sorry.”
At those words, Psyche’s gaze moved from my hand to my face.
She reached out to take the flower and turned her face away.
“Whatever. Thanks anyway.”
Since she’s not showing her expression, I can’t tell if her anger has subsided or not.
At that moment, footsteps were heard on the stairs. When I turned my head, Master was coming down with a groggy expression.
Judging by her deeply furrowed brow, she seems quite annoyed.
“Didn’t you go up to sleep?”
” I forgot we have a guest coming..”
Just then, the main door of the cabin burst open.
